Infrastructure Architect - Independent Consultant (2020 – Present)

·         Responsible for implementing significant infrastructure modernization projects.  My role included requirements gathering, technology and vendor selection, technical design, project management, qualification, and project communications.

·       Designed and implemented a Hybrid-Cloud based HPC infrastructure using Penguin, Intel, NVIDIA, Mellanox, Weka, Isilon, Starfish, Bright, Slurm, Equinix and AWS technologies.

·       Designed and implemented an Oracle infrastructure to replace an aging Exadata environment. We targeted a fully commodity-based solution and ended up deploying with HPE Greenlake managed services. This project involved both technical design elements along with ITIL Service Management implementation between Biogen and Greenlake.

 

Director; Global Platform Architecture (2013 – 2020)

§  Responsible for the performance, reliability and effectiveness of a global life science research infrastructure supporting 7000 researchers.

§  Recruited and managed a multi-discipline architecture team, tasked with modernizing a global research infrastructure.

·       Developed an enterprise Storage Strategy to address growth of unstructured research data.

·       Designed and implemented a metadata-based Data Management Platform that enables researchers to tag, find and access data globally

·       Designed and implemented a Global Cloud-Edge Datacenter Strategy, enabling secure, high performance hybrid cloud architectures.

·       Designed and implemented secure VPC connectivity with AWS in three regions, allowing 10Gbs access to public and private AWS resources.

·       Designed and implemented a Global WAN.  Improved performance 300% and reduced costs by 50% annually. 

·       Designed and implemented Nutanix Hyperconverged VM platform, saving $5M SAN replacement costs.

·       Designed and implemented Cohesity to replace Data Domain. Saved $3.5M

·       Designed and implemented a secure Docker/Kubernetes Container Platform. Moved 700 middleware servers from VM to container

·       Implemented AWS Glacier for data archive, saving $150k/PB/yr.

 

Senior Director; Service Delivery (2010 – 2013)

§  I was hired to re-engineer, modernize, and consolidate a SaaS infrastructure that had grown through multiple corporate acquisitions.

§  Deployed VMWare based virtualization, NetApp based SAN, Automation, secure network architecture, monitoring, and instituted ITIL based Change, Incident and Problem management processes.

§  Successfully mentored the organization through a two-year integration into IBM after an acquisition in Aug 2010.

§  Conviva was an early-stage startup deploying proprietary technologies to stream live video content to a worldwide audience.

§  Created a Service infrastructure from ground up; Built a SaaS platform across multiple worldwide datacenters.

§  Deployed a server infrastructure using Equinix datacenters in US and Europe.

§  Managed a diverse application portfolio, including Monitoring; IT Process Workflow Tools, Configuration Management; and Data Warehousing systems.

Director Service Operations Microsoft / WebTV  1996 – 2003

§  WebTV was a start-up which created one of the first web based online services. Microsoft acquired WebTV in 1998.

§  Built the WebTV Operations organization as the service grew to 2M users.
